Studios Without Walls Moves to Town

Brookline-based sculpture collaborative exhibits “3/300” on Monmouth Street May 21-22

Studios Without Walls, a Brookline-based collaborative group of thirteen sculptors and conceptual artists, will be exhibiting experimental temporary installation and outdoor art at three locations on Monmouth Street this May 21-22 as part of Brookline Artists Open Studios. The title, “3/300” relates to the celebration of the Town of Brookline’s 300 th Anniversary year. The three locations are the Brookline Arts Center, the Church of Our Saviour, and Wheelock College’s Brookline Campus, all located on Monmouth Street between St. Mary’s and Hawes Streets.

In addition to the exhibitions, the artists will be inviting their audience to engage with them in the art-making process via a “Draw-IN” on Sunday, May 22 where families, school children, and elders will be invited and supported by the artists to respond to the art through drawing and poetry. A guided sculpture walk will also be offered on Sunday. The sculpture walk begins at 12:30 at the Church of Our Saviour. The “Draw-In” begins at 2 pm at Brookline Arts Center. A related forum with the artists will also be held. Entitled, "Art and Spirituality," it will be held on Sunday, May 15 at 10 am at the Church of Our Saviour.

The sculptors who comprise Studios Without Walls are represented in museums and private collections in the United Sates and Europe, and work in a range of media from paper to bronze, fiber to clay. The artists are: Susan Alport, Muriel Angelil, Myrna Balk, Louise Farrell, Wendy Hoo, Janet Hansen Kawada, Janna Longacre, Bette Ann Libby, Peter Lipsitt, Elizabeth Michelman, Joan Schwartz, Barbara Vogelsang, and Jim Wright. Studios Without Walls has been producing exhibitions for eight years – beginning at Allandale Farm in association with Brookline Artists Open Studios, and adding additional exhibitions for the past four years.

The collaborative has been supported by the Brookline Arts Commission and was named an “Exemplary Community Project” by the Massachusetts Cultural Council.

The members of Studios Without Walls are committed to projecting a full and lively presence in the community and increasing public visibility of creative thinking at work in our own backyard. In addition to public exhibitions the artists engage in educational programs in schools such as the Lawrence School in Brookline and the Upham’s Corner Charter School in Dorchester, as well as other organizations in the

community, such as the Brookline Senior Center. The artists continually seek new ways to bring audience to their work and share their artistic process with their audiences.

Additional exhibitions in the coming months include:

  • August – November, 2005: “Time Space Continuum,” a multi-season exhibition of installation and environmental art at Allandale Farm.
  • September 18, 2005: “A Room Without a View,” at the Coolidge Corner Marriott Courtyard Hotel
  • November 13: “The Strength of Three,” a participatory public sculpture using recycled materials at Brookline’s 300 th Birthday Party in Larz Anderson Park.
